In Knox County, Tenn., two-fifths of the 488,000 people who live there deal with some sort of mental health breakdown, per a recent report by the Mental Health Association of East Tennessee.
And they don't have easy access to mental health care: They have to travel two hours to Chattanooga to get help at one of the state's four mental health hospitals.
In late October, the Knox County Commission, along with County Mayor Glenn Jacobs, urged the state to provide financial support for the construction and operation of a mental health hospital in Knox County.
Mental Health America estimates that nearly half of adults and more than 60% of youths with mental health issues don't receive treatment, while the National Institute of Mental Health estimates that 52.9 million adults in 2020 will be living with mental health issues.
"Two-fifths of the more than 488,000 people who live in Knox County deal with some sort of mental health breakdown," per the Mental Health Association of East Tennessee's "State of Mental Health in America" report.
The report notes that 15% of younger Americans had a major depressive episode within the previous year, and nearly 11% cope with severe depression.
