A group of 5 civic leaders met at the Little Haiti Cultural Complex Thursday February 25, 2016 to discuss the State of Black Philanthropy in Miami. Over 150 attendees listened to the panel discuss different ways to grow philanthropy in the area.
The panel discussed the challenges in the black community including urban youth violence, economic mobility, and education. One panelist discussed the different views on what it means to be a philanthropist in the black community, and how the black community has "greater needs" than other communities, but does note that giving is growing. Another panelist notes that the assets of African Americans are less, but that a higher percentage of household income is being given by black families.
The giving will grow one step at a time.
