Artificial intelligence (AI) is here to stay, and tech billionaires are stepping up their philanthropic efforts to support research into the technology, Fortune reports.
"By providing grants, philanthropists aim to ensure that AI technologies contribute to human welfare and equity rather than solely creating profit-driven sectors," the site says.
Some tech billionaires, such as former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and his wife Wendy, have committed millions of dollars to AI grant programs.
Others, such as eBay founder Pierre Omidyar, support nonprofits using AI for scientific innovation but also advocate for data privacy protection and responsible regulation.
The Ford, MacArthur, and Rockefeller foundations, among others, are more skeptical about the technology and fund projects examining its potential harmful effects.
But not all tech billionaires are on the same page.
Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn, has funded research centers at Stanford University and the University of Toronto focused on AI's impact on healthcare and education.
eBay founder Pierre Omidyar's Omidyar Network supports nonprofits using AI for scientific innovation but also advocates for data privacy protection and responsible regulation.
Meanwhile, the Patrick McGovern Foundation has committed $40 million to help nonprofits use AI for the benefit of the environment, economic prosperity, and healthy communities.
